Homoeopathy is based on the principle of ‘SIMILIA SIMILIBUS CURENTOR’ or ‘LET LIKES BE CURED BY LIKES’. This many would have heard and read about, but what does it signify? To put it in simple words, Homoeopaths treat a person not for a symptom but for a reason for him to have got it. It honours the fact that why is it that when under the same kind of circumstances, say for example just before an exam one child gets diarrhoea, while one becomes asthmatic. The Homoeopathic physician investigates the entire history ranging from childhood, desires, aversions, bowel movements, sweat, posture during sleep, dreams, nature, modalities etc. I have often heard people making fun of these questions that we ask as Homoeopaths, but there is a definite purpose behind it. Each carefully assessed question leads us a step closer to the remedy that we would be prescribing. It is the totality of the symptoms that leads us to form a disease picture that we match to a drug picture, keeping in mind that every individual is different from the rest. Each answer speaks about how unique the person sitting across the physician’s table is. What makes him or her so different from the rest.? Thus, it is also aptly called as THE SCIENCE of INDIVIDUALIZATION.

Popping pills had become a way of life with me. What had started off as mild hypertension in my late 20s had, over the years, deteriorated into what doctors told me could be conditions triggered off by medication to keep my blood pressure under control. Beta-blockers triggered off severe asthma. These were replaced by diuretics, which led to an attack of gout.
Steroid inhalers for asthma caused recurring sore throats and fungal infections that required antibiotics. Those, perhaps, led to chronic Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, which aggravated the sore throats some more because of acid reflux! Throw in severe food allergies to everything from shellfish and eggs to arhar dal and garlic, recurring insomnia, a slipped-disc, acute rhinitis…my life was beginning to sound, and worse feel, like the inspiration for Dante’s Descent Into Hell. My bedside table was a litter of pills and inhalers. My doctor and chemist bills ran into thousands each month. I had been through half a dozen tests for everything from lung function to brain MRIs to sleep tests. In short, at 40, I had become the pharmaceutical companies’ dream: a source of captive revenue for the rest of my living days, as my life progressed from one chronic complaint to the next, in a saga that would perhaps end on the operating table of some expensive hospital, in one final flameout of big spending. That’s where Dr. Malti stepped in, almost by accident. My wife, who had been trying unsuccessfully to sell me Homeopathy for some time, finally broke down my ‘rational’ resistance. On a particularly bad day, as each breath was a struggle, and my body was stretched taut with the effort to breathe, I found myself sitting across from a patiently nodding Malti, narrating the story of my life to a complete stranger. It would be much later that I would begin a different struggle: the one to explain this experience that could only be described as miraculous, hampered by 40 years of conditioning, and using the suddenly inadequate tools of scientific rationality. It has been months since that evening and Dr. Malti has, with extreme good humour, at the oddest times of day or night, and I’m sure at great personal cost, guided my recovery from chronic illness. She has ensured that, apart from one little pill a day to keep my BP under control, I have not touched a single allopathic drug. She has patiently explained the processes of homeopathic healing, guiding me through an almost text-book perfect cure, as I regress through all the stages of my disease (yes, one of the things I have come to believe is that I suffered from one single disease, with many different manifestations) in almost the exact reverse order as I ‘fell’ ill. While the cure is still far from over and there are times when my patience begins to wear thin, she has unfailingly kept hers (how she deals with dozens of other patients like me making the most astonishing demands on her time, is the other miracle). I have no doubt anymore that if a complete recovery is possible for me, she will be the one to take me to it. As for the how and why of this experienced miracle, I must confess that I have only the most rudimentary understanding, and pretty a-scientific it is, too. Perhaps someday science would have advanced enough to explain it. Until then, here’s hoping that there are a thousand more Dr. Maltis, unselfishly and ‘unscientifically’ guiding millions of people back to good health.
Dr Malti Sharma came into our lives almost 15 years ago. A fresh young doctor, she had, even then, a fine acumen and ability to put her finger exactly on the personality of the person and therefore deliver a spot on diagnosis. Thanks to Dr Malti, my children spent an allopathic and importantly antibiotic free childhood. My husband kicked years of steroids and asthma in the couple of hours she took to write his history, a fact that I count and miraculous. Closer to date, my father suffered with Congestive Heart failure. Being an army man, he was loth to put his faith in homeopathic medicine. In all the 11 years that I have consulted Malti, I have never heard her saying "No". Remember, these were not only face-to-face but many online consultations as well - once or twice in the middle of the night!
